How to Avoid Tooth Decay When You Have Braces

Posted .

If you have braces, it’s important to keep your smile in tip-top shape so you can prevent cavities. Cavities, also known as tooth decay, are a dangerous dental issue that can destroy your teeth if you’re not careful. They can also complicate your orthodontic treatment. So, our orthodontist, Dr. Christopher Corsa, encourages you to do everything to prevent cavities by doing the following things:

-Focus on brushing: Make sure to brush regularly with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Brushing after each meal and snack can remove the food particles and bacteria that can attack your teeth and create cavities. Be sure to brush for two minutes each time and to scrub under the wires and around the brackets.

-Focus on flossing: It’s important to floss at least once a day. However, if you can floss more, do it. Flossing cleans the spaces between your teeth and helps you prevent cavity development in those areas. If you have a hard time flossing, use special tools, like a floss threader, to make the job easier.

-Visit your dentist: Your six-month checkups are very important when preventing cavities. The cleaning treatment provided removes the plaque and bacteria that promote cavities, and the fluoride treatment strengthens your tooth enamel. So, make sure you attend your checkups every six months.
