How Can I Help My Child Have a Straight Smile?

Fortunately, there are things you can do to help your child grow into a strong and beautiful smile, and one of those things is minimizing their chances of having crooked and misaligned teeth. There are a few things you can do to minimize those chances, and our orthodontist, Dr. Christopher Corsa, is happy to tell you all about them!

The first is to keep a lookout for any oral fixation habits your child has. Many children suck their thumbs, thrust their tongues, and use pacifiers. If your child does one or more of these things, it’s important to help them stop. This is because these habits apply undue pressure to the teeth and encourage them to shift. They can also alter the development of the mouth. So, if you need help helping your child, our orthodontist can help you.

The second is to bring your child into our office at an early age. It’s best to bring your child in for their first consultation by the time they are 7 years old. This is recommended because the appointment will allow our orthodontist to examine the mouth and determine that everything is in working order. If an issue is detected, he will give you the information you need to keep your child’s smile in top-notch condition.

The third is to use space maintainers when your child loses their teeth. Sometimes the mouth can get crowded because your child’s 20 baby teeth get replaced with 32 permanent teeth. Space maintainers can keep the teeth in their proper positions and help your child prevent overcrowding issues.
