Do you have a sore in the mouth that is shallow, white or yellow with a red border? If so, you may be experiencing a canker sore! If you are in need of relief from a canker sore in the mouth, we can help.

When you are first wearing braces, these sores may crop up as the soft oral tissues in your mouth is temporarily irritated for a week or two while they adjust to the braces in the mouth.

Dr. Christopher Corsa and our team in San Jose, California are happy to share some tips today to help you when you have canker sores. So let’s take a look!

#1 Dental wax is a wonderful tool to use while your mouth is adjusting to wearing new braces! Dental wax, or orthodontic wax, protects the oral tissues from irritation while they heal. Simply take a small piece of wax, roll it into a ball, and adhere it onto the parts of the braces causing you discomfort.

This wax is ideal for preventing oral sores in the first place. Be sure to place it onto those areas where the braces are rubbing until the oral tissues have toughened up a bit. And should you ever have a broken wire or rubbing from loose bands, you can end up with a sore mouth, tongue or canker sores unless you protect the area with dental wax.

#2 Ointment can help with the pain and irritation of a canker sore or sores. Just apply a tiny bit of over-the-counter numbing ointment over the area.

#3 Saltwater rinse can be an effective way to keep bacteria away from the affected area.

#4 If needed, over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen, can help with the pain until the area heals.

#5 To avoid irritating sensitive oral tissues while they adjust to your new braces, stay away from hot, spicy, or acidic foods. Give your mouth time to adjust and it will be fine in no time!
